As people age, they often develop problems with their vision. Age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness, affects around two million Americans over 50. Glaucoma, another leading cause of blindness, is estimated to affect about 2.7 million Americans aged 40 or older. Cataracts currently affect more than 24.4 million Americans over age 40, and by age 75, nearly 50% of all Americans will have cataracts. Diabetic retinopathy affects 7.7 million Americans aged 40 and older.
Many of these issues with vision can be reduced significantly, or even prevented entirely, with proper nutrition and eye care. Most of these problems are related to chronic inflammation and cardiovascular disease, along with free radical damage to the eyes.
