Sunshine Sharing - The Healing Power of Astringent Herbs

Astringents are one of the twelve major categories of herbs. They are the primary remedy for the tissue state of relaxation, where tissues are soft, swollen, loose or spongy and where there is excessive discharge, such as bleeding, sinus drainage, diarrhea, excessive perspiration, and incontinence.

Astringent herbs can be recognized by their slightly bitter flavor and the tightening, drying sensation they produce in the mouth. They are commonly found in barks, stems, and roots where they may play a role in preventing insect damage and diseases in plants.

In this issue of Sunshine Sharing, we talk about astringents and tannins and their many applications. We also introduce you to many wonderful astringent herbs and their uses, including white oak bark, bayberry root bark, uva ursi, red raspberry leaves, and yarrow.
