Ayurveda is one of the two oldest healing systems in the world, the other being traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Ayurveda originated over two thousand years ago in India. The term Ayurveda combines the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge), which aptly describes this system of medicine because it promotes overall health and the balance between the body, mind and spirit.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, being healthy is more than the absence of disease. It is a radiant state of energy and vigor achieved by moderation and balance in food intake, sleep, exercise and other activities of daily life. These lifestyle factors are complemented by various remedies, primarily derived from herbs.
Many traditional Ayurvedic herbs have become part of modern Western herbal medicine, including turmeric, andrographis, ashwaganda, bitter melon, holy basil, brahmi (bacopa), boswellia, gymnema and the blend of fruits known as triphala. Ayurvedic concepts have also become increasingly influential among Western herbalists and holistic physicians.
In this issue of Sunshine Sharing we'll explore some basic principles and remedies from Ayurvedic medicine, starting with the tri-dosha system of Ayurvedic medicine.
