There is an old saying, “one man’s meat is another man’s poison,” suggesting that what may be healthy for one person may make another person feel worse. All too often, well-meaning people think that because a particular diet or supplement plan improved their health, that it will improve everyone’s health.

Nothing could be farther from the truth and the most fundamental reason for this fact is that we are genetically different, not to mention that we live in different climates, undergo different stresses, and may be at different stages of life. This is why natural healing traditions throughout the world recognized the importance of understanding the constitution of a person and not just the health problems they were experiencing.

One of our fundamental genetic differences that influences our constitution is our blood type. The four different blood types, O, A, B and AB, are prone to differing tendencies as to the types of ailments to which they are prone.

For instance, people with the O Blood Type are prone to higher levels of catecholamines, like dopamine and epinephrine. This can make them aggressive when stressed, moody, and more prone to problems like bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. They are also more prone to hyperactivity as children.

In contrast, people with Blood Type A are more likely to overproduce cortisol under stress and have a hard time breaking it down. This can make it more difficult for them to recover from stress and lead to insomnia, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and brain fog.

People with Blood Type B have naturally high cortisol levels, which causes them to overreact to stress, can disrupt sleep, and suppress immune activity. This can also lead them to react in an overly emotional manner to stress and suffer from lethargy and a lack of motivation. They are susceptible to bacterial infections and low grade viral infections.

People with the rarest blood type, AB, tend to have a sensitive digestive tract and an overly-tolerant immune system, which makes them more prone to infections. They also tend to have higher levels of the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine and lower levels of dopamine, which can cause them to feel angry and alienated from others.

We’ll talk more about the genetic strengths and weaknesses of each blood type in this month’s Herbal Hour and discuss the various supplements that can help promote optimal health for each blood type.
