Native Americans relied heavily on herbs for their healing. Different tribes had different systems of medicine, so there is no unified system of Native American healing. However, Native American herbalism relies heavily on a connection with plants and Mother Nature. Native American energetic systems are typically based on the four elements (air, water, fire and earth) and/or the four sacred directions (north, south, east and west). In Native American teachings it is important to harvest plants in a sacred, sustainable manner. Many modern herbalists borrow heavily from Native American teachings in their practices, but an herbalist who selects this specialty is one who has trained directly with a native American healer, usually in some type of apprenticeship.
