Secrets to a Long Life: What we can learn about health from the world's blue zones

Blue zones are areas where a surprisingly large percentage of the population lives to an old age in relatively good health. These zones include Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria, Singapore, and Loma Linda, California. Dan Buettner spent many years researching these zones and discovered four common denominators in the lifestyles of these long-lived people. Two of which are relatively common knowledge, exercise and a healthy diet, and two that may be less obvious, a sense of purpose in life and good relationships with family and friends.

In thisĀ Sunshine Sharing Hour we'll explore the specifics of what Dan Buettner learned with an eye to those things we can do to improve our health so we can remain healthy as we age. We'll talk about exercise as a relaxed part of life, not as overtaxing workouts. We'll talk about major dietary factors common to long-lived people, such as plant foods, the use of herbs, and other natural foods. We'll also explore the social and psychological aspects of long-lived people, including the importance of building relationships and maintaining our usefulness to others.
