Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. The term Ayurveda combines the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge) and the name fits this system of medicine that originated over two thousand years ago in India because it is a healing system that promotes balance between the body, mind and spirit.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, being healthy is more than the absence of disease. It is a radiant state of energy and vigor achieved by moderation and balance in food intake, sleep, exercise and other activities of daily life, complemented by various remedies in the form of plant-based medicines.
Many Ayurvedic herbs have found their way into modern Western herbal medicine, including turmeric, andrographis, ashwagandha, bitter melon, holy basil, bacopa, boswellia, gymnema and triphala. Plus, Ayurvedic concepts have become increasingly influential among Western herbalists and holistic physicians.
