Sleep is vital to good health, but experts suggest that about half of all adult Americans suffer from some degree of insomnia, and about one-third suffer from life-disrupting insomnia. This lack of sleep affects our mood, metabolism, and even our immune system. It also makes us less efficient in our work and increases our risk of accidents and injuries.
Although some people seem to get by on only seven hours of sleep, most people need at least eight hours and perhaps as much as nine for optimal health. Unfortunately, that seldom happens in modern society. There are many reasons for not being able to get the sleep your body needs.
Stress is a big reason why many people don’t get enough sleep. Their body is just too tense and wound up to relax. In fact, a person can get so wound up and exhausted from stress that they become hyperalert and minor disturbances will prevent them from getting to sleep or startle them in the night and wake them up.
A big problem in modern society is light pollution. While artificial lighting has been a great blessing to mankind, it carries with it a curse, too. The hormone that induces sleep, melatonin, is only created and released in darkness. Modern lighting can interfere with melatonin production and inhibit sleep.
Other health issues interfere with sleep as well. For example, blood sugar imbalances can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night and be unable to go back to sleep. Congestion in your liver can prevent you from relaxing at night and getting to bed on time, and cause you to wake up groggy instead of refreshed. Respiratory congestion can obstruct airways, causing snoring and even sleep apnea. Urinary issues, such as prostate problems in men, can cause frequent trips to the restroom at night. And finally, pain can interfere with the ability to sleep.
We’ll explore all of these causes of sleep problems, and a few more, in this Sunshine Sharing Hour. We’ll also suggest natural remedies that can resolve these issues and allow you to get the rest you need.
