Inflammation: The Underlying Cause of Pain and Disease

While the human body can be afflicted with numerous chronic ailments and many types of pain in various body parts, all of these health issues have one thing in common—they all begin with chronic inflammation. By itself, inflammation is not a bad thing. It’s the normal response of the body to any kind of tissue damage.

Inflammation activates the immune system to check out the injured area for invading organisms. It also sequesters the area to slow the spread of any toxins introduced via the injury. But, once these purposes have been achieved, the inflammation needs to subside and healing needs to take place.

When this doesn’t happen, inflammation becomes chronic, and that’s bad! What was intended as a mechanism to slow the spread of irritants now becomes an impairment to normal circulation, depriving the chronically inflamed tissues of vital oxygen, nutrients, and waste removal. The chronically activated immune system may begin attacking the body’s own tissues in autoimmune reactions, contributing to, instead of preventing damage.

Finally, the sharp pain associated with acute inflammation, which was meant to inform you of the injury, now becomes dull, constant pain, which will never go away until the inflammation is stopped and the tissues begin to heal.

In this month’s Sunshine Sharing Hour, we’ll explore why people develop this chronic inflammation, the health problems it creates, and what we can do to reverse the problem. Correcting chronic inflammation not only eases the pain associated with it, it actually allows tissues to heal and the body to return to its natural state of health.
