Solving Learning Problems

For some people, learning seems easy. They are able to pay attention, readily absorb information by either listening or reading and are also able to retain and use their new knowledge.

Others experience mental blocks that make it difficult for them to pay attention, understand or remember things they read or hear, and to express themselves verbally or in writing. They may also have problems with coordination or mastering specific tasks such as math, reading, or writing. 

The most common learning disability is dyslexia which accounts for about 80% of the cases. This is a problem in communication between the two hemispheres of the brain which can make coordination difficult and interfere with reading, writing, and comprehension. There are also more specific types of learning problems with include difficulty with understanding spoken language, difficulty working with math and numbers, and difficulty understanding non-verbal clues such as body language and facial expressions.

Learning difficulties can also cause behavioral problems such as being restless or impulsive, being disorganized, acting out in a classroom, and finding it difficult to change. Many of these problems have a physical cause. The brain may have been injured due to a mother using alcohol or drugs during pregnancy, exposure to heavy metals, or a traumatic brain injury. It may also involve difficult experiences (trauma or abuse) in childhood.

While there are no quick or easy answers to all learning disabilities, there are many natural remedies and techniques one can try to help overcome them or at least compensate for them. We’ll explore these options in this month’s Herbal Hour.
