Stay Healthy This Cold and Flu Season: Avoid getting sick this winter by boosting your immune system

Every winter there’s an increase in the number of people who get viral diseases like colds and flu. Is it the cold weather that makes us more susceptible to catching cold? Or, is something else involved?

One possible answer is not getting enough vitamins. Vitamin D3 is synthesized from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to sunlight. With the shorter days and longer nights, people get less exposure to sunlight, which means they have lower levels of vitamin D3. Since this vitamin is critical to immune function, this may be a factor.

Because fresh, ripe foods, especially vitamin C-rich fruits, are more available in the summer, and less so in the winter levels of vitamin C will be lower. Many traditional people consumed special foods in winter such as pine nettle tea or rose hips, which are high in vitamin C to help them stay healthy. Since vitamin C is also necessary for proper immune function this may also be a factor.
