Xenoestrogens

There is a serious problem affecting the reproductive health of both men and women worldwide—xenoestrogens. Xeno means foreign, which means these are chemicals that act as unnatural estrogen-like substances. They overstimulate estrogen receptors in the human body, causing a variety of harmful effects. 

In females, they cause young girls to enter puberty and develop breasts at an early age. In older women, they contribute to PMS problems, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and estrogen-dependent cancers, such as breast and uterine cancer. Many researchers consider them to be the primary cause of breast cancer.

Xenoestrogens also have harmful effects on males. They compete with testosterone, reducing testosterone levels in men. This results in reduced sex drive, weight gain, loss of muscle tone, the development of “man boobs” or breasts in men, erectile dysfunction, prostate enlargement and cancer, lowered sperm counts and infertility, undescended testicles and even deformations of the male sex organs. 

Clearly, we want to avoid xenoestrogens and minimize their harmful effects if we want to stay healthy. Sources of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals include: 

• Many pesticides and herbicides
• Soft plastics
• Some commercially raised eggs, meat and dairy products 
• Certain cosmetics and beauty care products
