When we go to the doctor, we are asked about our health history and sometimes about our family health history. Medicine realizes that physical ailments tend to run in families. We may have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, for instance. Iridology, which reveals our inherited constitution, aligns with this. Iris patterns (such as radial furrows, contraction furrows, and lymphatic tophi) as well as markings in the various reaction fields of the iris (which correlate to various organs and body parts) are often found in parents and grandparents. Thus, a marking in the heart area of the iris can reveal a potential family history of heart disease.
However, these iris patterns and markings are also associated with mental and emotional issues, which points to the fact that mental and emotional issues can also be inherited from our family tree. Denny Johnson, developer of the personality model of iridology, has recognized that many of our issues come from our grandparents and great-grandparents, and I've personally worked with people who have patterns of physical or sexual abuse, alcoholism, and suicide in their family tree.
There is a recognition in psychology now that this can happen, and it's called generational trauma. Generational trauma involves severe trauma in our ancestors that ripples down into the current generation. This kind of trauma is also known as intergenerational trauma or transgenerational trauma. So, some of the "baggage" we carry in life isn't just from our own experience; it's family baggage.
There is debate about how much of this is genetic and how much of it is nurture, that is, the family environment in which we grow, but I know that some of it is not from our family environment because I've seen adopted children manifest patterns from their biological parents that are not related to the nurturing they received from their adoptive parents. Still, whether it's nature (genetic), nurture (family dynamics), or even energetic (the spiritual connection we have to our family tree), it's a real issue and one that often needs addressing.
In this special class, we'll talk about the problem of generational trauma, and I'll share some personal stories about how I became aware of the problem. I'll also share some stories I heard in a class I took from Denny. Then, I'll discuss tools we can use to identify and heal generational trauma. I'll talk about how this not only heals us, but actually helps to heal our family tree in both directions. I hope you'll join me for this fascinating journey into a dimension of health few people recognize, let alone know how to work with.
