From puberty to menopause women experience a monthly hormonal cycle that typically lasts about 28 days. A surprisingly large percentage of women suffer from various discomforts during parts of this cycle.
The most common problem is a variety of physical and psychological symptoms that occur right before menstruation begins. Collectively known as pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), these symptoms may include bloating, breast swelling and pain, fatigue, and headaches, as well as mood disturbances like anger, anxiety, and depression.
About 75% of women experience at least mild PMS, with about 30 to 40% experiencing symptoms severe enough to disrupt their normal lifestyle. For about 3-8% the symptoms are so severe that they have been given a different label, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
In addition, many women experience problems with menstruation itself, such as heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) or painful cramps (dysmenorrhea). Some women also experience a lack of periods, a problem called amenorrhea.
The sad thing is that most of these problems are avoidable. The hormonal issues that cause them are related to poor nutrition and other unhealthy lifestyle practices, as well as mental and emotional stress.
