Stress! You Can Handle It.

Life is filled with challenges, conflicts, difficulties, and sometimes hardships. Recent years have brought many challenges from new diseases, to rising prices for food and other necessities of life, to reports of wars and conflicts throughout the world. With everything that’s going on it the world, just listening to the news can be enough to evoke a feelings of stress in many people.

We often think of stress as something that happens to us, that is, we assume that the events of our lives and the world are causing our stress. And while it’s true that events and headlines can cause stress-producing shock and fear, much of what we call stress is due to our reaction to these things, not to the situations themselves.

While we can’t avoid difficulties, we can mediate their effects on our mental and emotional health by learning how to manage our stress. Stress management isn’t going to stop bad things from happening, but it will allow you to handle what’s happening in a healthier way.

For starters, your physical health is important to your ability to manage stress. If your body is getting the right nutrition, you’ll be able to handle the challenges of life with less stress. If you’re physically active, you’ll also manage life’s challenges more effectively. There are also herbs and supplements you can take to help reduce stress responses and rebuild your health when it’s been depleted by chronic stress.

But, you also need to develop mental and spiritual attitudes that minimize the negative effects of stress. Prayer, meditation, positive attitudes, and faith will help you handle hardships better. We’ll explore all of these stress management skills in this month’s Herbal Hour.
