Hippocrates is often quoted as saying, "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food." And while herbs and nutritional supplements can be helpful, they should supplement, not supplant, a healthy diet. But the line between foods and medicines isn't very clear when it comes to plants. Many herbs we use medicinally have actually been consumed as foods, including hawthorn, burdock, dandelion, dong quai, and many others. And, many foods can also be used as medicines for healing, which is the topic we'll cover in this Sunshine Sharing Hour.
Specifically, we'll talk about how to use common foods to heal specific health issues. Examples of foods we'll be discussing as medicines include apples, asparagus, barley, beets, cabbage, carrots, cherries, celery, coconut, cucumbers, cranberries, grapes, kale, lemons, oats, onions, pineapple, pomegranate, potatoes, radishes, and zucchini. We'll also talk about using foods like blackstrap molasses, honey, and salt for healing.
