Most people aren't gathering their own herbal medicines. They're buying them already prepared from various companies. So, why should they be interested in learning about field botany and plant identification?
There are two primary reasons why I believe herbalists should know the basics of field botany. First, there are many reasons why various herbal medicines could cease to be commercially available. It's already happened with various plants during my lifetime. Comfrey, chaparral, and Chinese ephedra have all fallen under government disapproval and are harder, if not impossible, to obtain. Supply chain problems could also disrupt supply as could various types of emergencies and natural disasters.
But even if herbs are available, understanding field botany also helps you understand herbs better. Plant parts are important, as different parts of the same plant may have different medicinal properties. In some cases, one part is edible and medicinal, while other parts may be poisonous. Knowing different plant structures has also helped me understand the energetics of herbal remedies better as well, especially when it comes to flower essences and using herbs for mental and emotional healing.
That's why I'm pleased to offer this course introducing the principles of field botany targeted towards herbalists. Knowing field botany will not only help you correctly identify medicinal herbs, but it will also help you understand how to use them better.
In this course, you'll be learning about flower parts and patterns, flower arrangements (inflorescence), leaf parts and types, as well as leaf arrangements, the different types of roots and fruits (both fleshy and dry), and other aspects of learning to really see the plants growing around you. I'll help you learn to look for patterns that rapidly identify different plant families, especially those with many medicinal herbs and spices, as well as how to see plants energetically. I look forward to sharing this interesting and valuable knowledge with you.
