The urinary system plays a critical role in overall health by removing waste products from the body. Without this vital function, you would die in a couple of days.
But the kidneys actually do even more than this critical job. For instance, they actually help to regulate blood pressure and to produce vitamin D and red blood cells. They also help to balance fluid and mineral levels, which plays a role in the structural health of the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys are said to “build the bones,” that is, to keep the structural system from weakening. Thus, problems like osteoporosis, arthritis, back pain, and weakness in the legs, knees, and ankles are seen as a deficiency of kidney qi or energy.
Therefore, the various health issues experienced in the urinary system, such as interstitial cystitis, urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, kidney stones, prostatitis, prolapsed bladder, and so forth aren’t limited in their effects to just the urinary system. They also affect overall health and vitality.
In this month’s Sunshine Sharing Hour we’ll discuss the many functions of the urinary system and how to keep it healthy. We’ll also talk about herbal and nutritional approaches to overcoming the various ailments that afflict the urinary system.
