Fats have a bad reputation, both for making people fat and for being bad for your health. Low fat or no fat is associated with health in the minds of many people. However, this anti-fat propaganda doesn’t affect the way many Americans eat, as fried foods and other high-fat snacks are still extremely popular.
The truth is, the body craves fat. Fat is associated with prosperity as in, living off the fat of the land. And, you need fats, as fatty acids are used in numerous body processes.
For example, fats are extremely important for brain and nervous system function, since the nervous system tissue is very high in fat. Fats are also necessary for proper immune function as they are used to create chemical messengers like prostaglandins and eicosanoids, which mediate inflammation and immune reactions.
Cholesterol, which is composed partly of fat, is necessary to make hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which is why low-fat diets can result in diminished sex drive and fertility.
Fats keep your skin moist. They are the preferred fuel to power the heart (even though people are led to believe that fats are bad for the heart). They also help you stay warm (especially in cold weather).
So, why do fats get such a bum rap? It’s because there are fats that are good for you and fats that aren’t. In this Herbal Hour, we’ll discuss why the body needs fat and the difference between the good fats and the bad fats. Making an oil change by using good fats instead of bad fats can give you more energy, help your immune system work better, protect your heart, reduce inflammation and pain and provide numerous other health benefits.
