Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils for healing, is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reasons. Essential oils have many marvelous healing properties. They can be used as natural disinfectants to prevent the spread of infection and they can stimulate tissue growth and repair. They can relax muscles, tone up the skin, stimulate digestion and circulation and even affect hormones and neurotransmitters.
This latter effect is what makes essential oils a marvelous tool for helping to improve attitude and mood. The sense of smell is directly tied into the limbic system, the part of the brain associated with emotions. This is a survival mechanism because smell alerts us to danger and helps us find the things in nature we need to survive. So, different odors will trigger immediate and specific reactions in the emotional part of the brain, which in turn affects the release of neurotransmitters throughout the brain and of various hormones in the glandular system via the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
The bottom line is that the aroma of various essential oils can be used to help to lift depression, ease anxiety, relax the body, calm anger, clear the mind, aid mental focus and alertness and otherwise help you to have a positive mental attitude and a happy, balanced mood.
In this month’s Sunshine Sharing Hour, we’ll explain the various subtle influences essential oils have on the mind and emotions and talk about how you can use them to restore a sense of mental and emotional well-being.
